Capers F. Smith, Jr., died Sunday, November 1, 2009 at his residence. Born November 8, 1945 in Atlanta, GA, he graduated from Jenkins High School in Savannah in 1963. He attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC and was a member and Vice President of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity.
He Graduated from Armstrong State College in 1969 and began his career in the Property and Casualty Insurance business with the General Adjustment Bureau in Atlanta and Valdosta, GA.
He returned to Savannah and was employed by the Adjusting Firm of Bland, Coleman, Kearney and Silas. He then was employed by the Atlantic Fire and Mutual Insurance Company of Savannah as Claims Manager, Underwriter, Vice President, and Corporate Secretary. He was on the original board of the Savannah Silent Witness Program. He served on the Chatham County Mosquito Control Commission and was Chairman in 1980. He worked for the Harleysville Insurance Company as Vice President of Administration and was a Territorial Marketing Specialist covering the entire state of Georgia.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra G. Smith, of Savannah. He will be dearly missed by his friends, Ricky and Diane Smith and family, Bill Cowan, and Frank Stevens considered a son by Capers. Capers was considered a wonderful friend by many and an asset to the Savannah community. Happy Birthday - Love, Miss Viv.
